Congratulation to Jeff for the winning design and thanks to all members that submitted designs - this was the most active design contest we've had. All the designs were amazing and as you can see from the final voting, members had a hard time picking just one.

The selected charity for the 2010 Charity Pin drive is:

Believe in Tomorrow Children's Foundation - http://www.believeintomorrow.org

This charity was the second runner up in the member voting, the reason why the first charity was bypassed is stated below. Here is more information on Believe in Tomorrow:
Believe in Tomorrow wrote:Believe In Tomorrow is the exclusive hospital housing provider for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. We also have five respite (think vacation) properties at the mountains and the beach, families with critically ill children can utilize, free of charge, to escape the stress of confronting a child's life threatening illness. The words we hear most often to describe the essence of what a week away at one of our beach or mountain properties has meant to a family include overwhelming relief, incredible joy and profound gratitude, for being given the chance to feel normal again, if only for just a week. It is quite humbling.

Two of our respite properties, the Believe In Tomorrow House on the Bay, in Ocean City, Maryland and the soon to open Believe In Tomorrow House at Pinnacle Falls, outside Asheville, NC, prioritize military families with critically ill children. We work closely with Walter Reed, Portsmouth Naval Hospital and military medical centers throughout the country to serve these families who honor us with their service to our country.
The first charity was disqualified - Children of Fallen Soldier's Relief Fund since we were unable to confirm their expense/charity ratio and from the info posted on their website their contributions seemed out of balance with their expenses. We attempted to contact the charity and received no response. We discussed with Jason who recommended and we are in agreement. In the future, we plan to do a more thorough background check prior to voting. In the past we've used CharityNavigator to verify charities like NIH Children's Inn, or we request the IRS Form 990 which are supposed to be made public. ACBC provided during the last drive, and BIT likewise provided when requested. CFSRF did not provide or respond at all.

Believe in Tomorrow has programs for military families, we are going to request our donations go to those programs so its in line with the intent of the first choice.

Here is some of the numbers from CFSRF website, we aren't accountants and are not making any claim that they are not a worthy charity - we just couldn't verify any of the information or obtain the Form 990:

2008
Donations: $419,769
Gave out: $77,500 (financial assistance, college funds, etc)
Salaries (own employees): $96,052
All other expenses: $99,979
Assets year end: $766,383

2007
Donations: $508,069
Gave out: $120.060
Salaries (own employees): $29,307
Assets year end: $593,882

BIT Form 990 are posted on their website. We hope everyone understands, if not please email me or one of the other officers.
